Halloween Town – Burbank, CA

Halloween Town in Burbank

Halloween Town in Burbank lives up to its “Nightmare Before Christmas”-esque name—it truly is Halloween here all year round. The store used to be in North Hollywood, but a few years ago they moved to this bigger location and really decked it out. This is what part of the inside looks like!

Halloween decorations

It’s such fun to browse through the rooms while hearing the “Munsters” theme and The Ghastly Ones on the sound system. Unfortunately, I didn’t take very many photos (and the ones I did get were fuzzy).

My favorite items are the vintage-esque goodies like candy jars and cameo necklaces, but they also have tons of costumes, accessories, decorations and a great book section that even has some Shag stuff. So, you might be wondering, “What does all this have to do with tiki?” OK, I’ll get to that…

Cursed on Voodoo Island t-shirt

I found this Rock Steady “Cursed on Voodoo Island” thermal shirt with tikis on it in the sale section for about $20. From what I can tell, it doesn’t seem to have any relation to the Boris Karloff movie “Voodoo Island.”

Boo!

If you’re in the neighborhood, I’d also suggest a stop at 8-Ball, which is just down the street. Just beware of hitchhiking ghosts!

Agrabah Bazaar at the Enchanted Tiki Room, Orlando

Agrabah Bazaar

The Agrabah Bazaar next to Disney World’s Enchanted Tiki Room houses all the tiki-related merch and is also a good place to loiter during impromptu Florida rainstorms.

Enchanted Tiki Room baseball cap

Of course, twenty minutes later the sun is blazing down so I was able to justify this Pele hat purchase as a necessary travel expense. Could this baseball cap be considered another convergence of tiki and America’s pastime?

Pele in Adventureland t-shirt

Most of these items made their way west over the summer to the Adventureland Bazaar at Disneyland’s Enchanted Tiki Room, but this was the first time that I’d spotted them.

Enchanted Tiki Room magnets

The store was stocked with the above hats, shirts and magnets, but they also had this cartoon tiki logo on hurricane and shot glasses. Anybody else find it odd that Disney sells shot glasses? Anyway…

Magic Carpet Ride at Disney World

I thought the Magic Carpet ride adjacent to the store was very neat—a golden camel spits at you! The movie “Aladdin” gets big billing in Disney World’s Adventureland, as you can see from this ride, Agrabah Bazaar and Iago’s unwelcome presence in the Enchanted Tiki Room. Gotta take the bad with the good, I guess.

Boutiki at Disney’s Polynesian Resort – Orlando, FL

Boutiki at Disney's Polynesian Resort

Ok, this is the last post about Disney World’s Polynesian Resort, I promise. I hesitated to include it, but it’s such a tiki train wreck, starting with these mischievous fellows with the crazy bulging eyes.

Yikes

Yikes.

Ugly tikis at the Polynesian Resort

I think these monstrosities are playing hide and seek in the store.

Polynesian Resort print

Aside from those giant ugly tikis, this is actually a great store. It had a bunch of merchandise tailored to the Polynesian Resort, like prints, mugs, t-shirts, etc. It was a nice change since all the shops at Disney World seem to carry most of the same stuff.

Disney World Polynesian Resort Shirt

I loved this design and had to get the shirt—you may remember that it’s Shag-approved! Mickey and Stitch make cameos, obviously, but I just noticed that Donald Duck might be in there too.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort has been undergoing extensive renovations in 2014, so consider this post a time capsule.
