The Enchanted Tiki Room – Disney World, Orlando, FL

Enchanted Tiki Room Disney World

A definite must-stop on our Disney World trip was, of course, The Enchanted Tiki Room in the Magic Kingdom park. It features a completely different exterior design than The Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland.

Outside the Enchanted Tiki Room

Next to it was the Dole Whip outpost, where I noticed they also had pineapple juice floats with vanilla ice cream. I’ve never been a fan of Disneyland’s float because the pineapple juice is too tart to blend well with the sweetness of the Dole Whip, so I’m thinking the vanilla might be a better match.

Sadly, I’d already ordered a chocolate/vanilla swirl cone so I didn’t get to taste test my theory. Next time!

Enchanted Tiki Room - Under New Management

Ten years ago, Disney defaced this treasure by adding the “Under New Management” element and bringing in Iago from “Aladdin” and Zazu from “The Lion King.” Ironic, as it seems like “new management” has ruined/closed many venerable tiki establishments (Trader Vic’s Beverly Hills, perhaps The Tonga Room next year).

William & Morris

It started off fine, with these two toucans named William and Morris (…get it?) that are talent agents bragging to each other about their clients, the new “co-owners” of the Tiki Room. As if I don’t already hear enough of these types of show-offy showbiz conversations in LA?

Talking tikis

In that intro, the Hawaiian tikis you know from Disneyland’s Enchanted Tiki Room are mutely relegated to the sidelines. Once inside, the birds and company begin with the beloved refrains of “In the Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Room…”
Boring tiki birds?

But then Iago interrupts with a tirade against the “boring tiki birds” sung to the tune of the Genie’s “Friend Like Me.” One of the lyrics warns that “you better get hip or your audience will disappear.” Ouch!

Enchanted Tiki Room tiki goddess

Angered by all this, the “tiki goddess of disaster” with a Chiquita Banana headdress emerges from the waterless tiki fountain to put the smack down. The incongruous song choices continue with the tikis singing doowoop “In the Still of the Night” and then rapping birds of paradise, “Conga” and “Get On Your Feet” (one of those imagineers must have been a big Gloria Estefan fan).

Tiki fountains in Florida

Anyway, it was interesting to see a completely different version of the Enchanted Tiki Room, but I was glad that I get to go home and see the real one. You can watch the whole show for yourself on YouTube. Possibly the best part is at the end where Iago says “Boy, I’m tired. I think I’ll head over to the Hall of Presidents and take a nap.”

Editor’s note: The Enchanted Tiki Room – Under New Management suffered a fire in January 2011. The attraction then underwent renovations to turn it back into a version of the original show and re-opened in August.

Tiki on “American Dad”

Mr. Baseball told me he had something to show me the other day, and I figured it was a web gem or photobomb or something on “this is why you’re fat,” but no—it was a tiki! On “American Dad,” no less. Kind of looks like a totem pole with its two heads, and it could be classified as “Disney style” because it’s unorthodox-ly painted à la the tikis in The Enchanted Tiki Room.

This was the scene:

Roger: “And here’s a giant tiki statue that cries booze. Five tears will have you on your ass. Ten tears will have you on my ass!”

For context, Roger the alien was creating the best spring break ever in his backyard, and he included that tiki along with a lazy river of beer and other alcoholic shenanigans.

Actually, I think it’s pretty ugly and would certainly not have it in my backyard…unless it really did cry booze.

Enchanted Tiki Room – Disneyland

Surprisingly, I was never really that much of a fan of the Enchanted Tiki Room until fairly recently. That is to say, I wouldn’t trace my tiki fanship back to some formative childhood visit here.

However, it deserves a lot of respect for being one of the classic Disneyland attractions, plus it pioneered the audio-animatronic technology that made so many other rides possible. Not to mention it’s a great place to take a nice air-conditioned break and rest your feet….but when you’re a kid, you’re much more interested in going on Space Mountain for the fifth time, so I never really got around to appreciating it until much later.

However, I have always been intrigued by the exterior, and I love how the tiki gods introduce themselves.

“The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room” song is catchy enough, obviously, as it will be stuck in your head all day at the park. It’s stuck in my head as I type this (and I’m sure it’s taken over your brain by just reading it!).

But the serenading orchids sort of remind me of “Little Shop of Horrors,” so they strike me as being inherently evil behind their animatronic facades.

img_3667

The talking birds of paradise, on the other hand, I have no beef with them.

img_3674

The parrots start to lose me with the rendition of “Let’s All Sing Like the Birdies Sing,” though the song’s saving grace is Jose crooning like Bing Crosby (and another bird imitating Louis Armstrong).

Artists Kevin Kidney and Jody Daily created bowls based on the Rongo statue above, and they were so popular that they made them in a new glaze.

Just had to take this little dude home with me! I found some in the Adventureland store but I hear they’re also on Main Street. The cashier said they have to restock them often since they’re selling pretty well (they’re from an edition of only 500).

img_3691

I also spotted one of the highly sought-after replicas of the tiki fountain. They have running water and everything, but I just couldn’t shell out one hundred and fifty smackaroos for one.

Perhaps the best part about the Enchanted Tiki Room is that you can oftentimes bypass the queue for that beguiling pineapple Dole Whip by entering the waiting area and lining up there.
