TastingTable Features New York Tiki Spots

Tasting Table New York

Just recently the Tiki-Ti was highlighted in the gourmet mag Saveur, and now my favorite foodie newsletter Tasting Table has published a round-up of “old-school tiki spots” in New York. (Although, the word ‘old-school’ is thrown around rather lightly here since many of the true old-school NY establishments closed long ago.)

Included are the Bikini Bar Sip ‘n’ Surf shop (their Hawaiian shaved ice martini has me intrigued), East Village bar Otto’s Shrunken Head, and King Yum (a mid-century-born Chinese restaurant with a thatched roof bar serving up “exotic drinks” in Queens).

And with the new tiki bar Painkiller to open soon, I have a newfound desire to visit the Big Apple again.

Tiki-Ti Featured in Saveur Magazine

Doctor’s offices aren’t known for having stellar selections of magazines, so I was pleasantly surprised to find the latest issue of Saveur on my MD’s coffee table. The March 2010 issue is devoted to the Los Angeles dining scene, and I recalled that my buddy the Gastronomer had contributed an article on KFC (Korean-fried Chicken) at Kyochon.

After giving that a gander, I flipped forward a couple pages and what do I find?

A short profile on the Tiki-Ti bar in Los Feliz entitled “Spirits of Polynesia” (click the link for full text) written by Jeff “Beachbum” Berry. Maybe this will make all those foodies and mixology buffs take (more) notice of tiki…

(Bonus: The Saveur web site also includes recipes for the Puka Punch and Cuba Kola. Makes me want to get my bartending skills up to snuff.)

Tiki at the LA County Fair – Pomona, CA

The end of summer is usually a bummer, but it also means the return of the Los Angeles County Fair. We always follow one rule: arrive hungry.

A trifecta of fried foods from Chicken Charlie’s: deep-fried artichokes (the ones we had last year from a different vendor were better), deep-fried s’mores (winner!), and a fried chicken sandwich in a Krispy Kreme jelly donut.

With all the bacon air fresheners, bacon jelly beans and other bacon-based items on the market, it’s safe to say that bacon has jumped the shark. But we still had to try the chocolate covered bacon.

There’s also a wine tasting tent where you can put together your own sampling flights. (This is California, after all.)

Then there’s the carnival rides that give you plenty of opportunities to lose that aforementioned lunch…

So what does all this have to do with tiki? Well, here’s the cheap tie-in to my blog’s theme.

A pony named tiki! Actually, I did find quite a bit of tiki at the LA County Fair, you’ll just to have to check back for it in my next few posts….More cute animals and ridiculous fair food after the jump!
