Everything but the Kitsch ‘N Sync at La Luz de Jesus

Back in March, La Luz de Jesus gallery in the back of Soap Plant/Wacko in Silver Lake hosted the 13th annual “Everything but the Kitsch ‘N Sync” art show.

The exhibition is not really tied to a theme in particular, but there were some tiki-influenced artists thrown into the mix. Plus you could sit back and take in the art on this Ku bench that’s kind of obscured in my photo.

Surfer/artist/animator Miles Thompson had some beautiful submissions in the show, including “The Harmony in 3s” above. (And according to this interview in Liquid Salt, he’s also a fan of The Palace Grill in Santa Barbara, so he’s definitely ok in my book!) I’m looking forward to seeing his Munktiki mug collaboration at the Tiki-Ti’s 50th anniversary shindig.

Black velvet paintings are the preferred medium for the amazing Heather Watts. (I hope to own one of her works someday.) This piece, “The Decision,” demonstrates her ethereal style.

Hawaii-based artist Brad Parker merged the classic Universal movie monsters with tiki style in this series of four paintings collectively called “Monsters on Vacation.” Apparently looking for a change of scenery from The Black Lagoon here is “The Kreature from Kona.”

I just had to post another for good measure, and because I like them so much. “Dracula Drinks…A Mai Tai” is another example of the eye-popping colors and intense detail characteristic of his paintings and prints.

Tiki Treasures & Polynesian Pinups II

Tiki Treasures & Polynesian Pinups

Just a few months late on this one, but I wanted to post a few pics from this summer’s Tiki Treasures & Polynesian Pinups II event at Bahooka… I wish I knew how to do my hair rockabilly-style like these ladies.

Kimo on steel guitar

Sadly, we couldn’t stay too long to hear all the musicians lined up, but we did catch a set from Kimo on steel guitar.

Tiki torch mugs from Go Tiki

Several vendors and artists set up tables for their wares, Go Tiki among them. I love the cleverness of their tiki torch mugs, so realistic!

Nelson's Tiki Hut
Nelson’s Tiki Hut
also had some great stuff—I scored an awesome handmade tiki frame decorated with netting and tiny glass fish floats.

Nelson's Tiki Hut frames

Mine’s the one in the middle (photo from Nelson’s Tiki Hut). In keeping with our tiki/baseball mashup, I put in it a photo of Mr. Baseball and I on the field at Dodger Stadium a summer or so ago.

Bahooka's Gold Cup

I was sipping on a Gold Cup ($6.50), which is billed as “rum, sugar and a touch of almond flavor,” but I mostly recall it tasting like pineapple juice. I would get it again, but there are so many other drinks to try!

Happy Easter (Island)!

Feeling extra festive, I picked up the above Easter Island Egg (Oh, how I love puns. They’re so punny!) by Eric October at the Hand Built Art Show at the Tonga Hut last night.

Mr. Baseball predicted that I wouldn’t be able to walk out of there without purchasing something, and he was right! Though he also joined in the spirit of arts patronism by getting some special “origami.” Alas, I’m not at liberty to provide any more details than that.

Also came home with some “Chocolatiki” cookies because I’m powerless to resist chocolate and peanut butter.

Nom!
