Trader Mort’s Liquor Store – San Diego, CA

A couple weeks after Vegas, Mr. Baseball and I went down to San Diego for Memorial Day weekend, kicking off part two of the summer Baseball/Tiki Road Trip.

After a truly epic traffic jam, we finally checked in to the hotel and then headed in the direction of Shelter Island, which was blessedly not too far from the Gaslamp District. We were on our way to our dinner destination, Bali Hai, but we had a little extra time so we stopped to check out Trader Mort’s Liquor Store.

Mr. Baseball stayed in the car and listened to the baseball game while I went to explore and take pics. You can’t really see in any of my photos, but surrounding the store were tiki torches that lit up at night.

While I do dig the tiki design here, I also love the idea of giving personality to otherwise generic/utilitarian places (like a liquor store).

The guy working here was super nice about me sneaking around the store, and even suggested I check out the upstairs. There wasn’t too much up there, but you could look down through the A-frame opening at the boat model in the previous shot.

I liked the toucan and all the bamboo, and also this intense tiki outside. He’s iconic enough that Munktiki produced a mug with his likeness that catches a pretty penny on eBay.

Aloha Apartments – Gardena, CA

Aloha!

While I was on my merry way to devour some loco moco at Bruddah’s Hawaiian Foods, I serendipitously drove by this neat apartment complex on Gardena’s Vermont Blvd. I made a u-turn to make sure I got a pic.

I figured it would be chronicled in Tiki Road Trip, and indeed, it was. This is what James Teitelbaum had to say about it:

“Nicely maintained vintage building with few Tikis; worth a trip, or just move in!”

Hmm, I probably would if I had a job at the Hustler Casino down the street! But I don’t…so I guess I won’t.

I didn’t see any of the aforementioned tikis, but I also didn’t sneak around too much. That would have been a little creepy. Looks like I may have a ways to go in my pursuit of being a budding urban archaeologist.

8-Ball – Burbank, CA

img_3703 Besides Ventura Boulevard, The Valley doesn’t really have too many interesting shopping opportunities going for it. But there’s a stretch of Magnolia Boulevard near Burbank that’s chock-a-block with some great stores, 8-Ball being one of them. (Also, Halloweentown!) img_3715

While a hula girl silently serenades you and a tree of hipster hats, you can browse the stock of pop culture books, Aloha shirts, pricey rockabilly clothes, novelty gifts and cards, Shag stickers and a pretty kick-ass jewelry selection under the glass at the register.

Neat neon!

img_3712 The tiki merch set-up gets bonus points for presentation. It seems to be mostly items that can be found (and are currently still in stock) on Tiki Farm, but it’s nice to know that I can hop over here and save on shipping. img_3719

These purses were my favorite discoveries in the store. I can’t decide which one I like more. Thoughts?

img_3721 If you’re already in the area, I recommend stopping by Yummy Cupcakes down the street and getting a few to go. (From the top: vanilla, vanilla with chocolate frosting and…”Pancakes & Bacon”—maple/bacon cake with maple icing and bacon on top—the idea of it was intriguing but not as tasty in execution).
img_3743 One more awesome thing about this store—Shag designed their promo postcards!
